I was a boy when I first met Mr. Phil Bolger. He was the guy that lived aboard his boat in the cove by my home, and rode around town on a bicycle. From my bike I saw a kind, grown up, boat loving man living the dream. Years later he invited me aboard his home Resolution where I bravely showed him my pencil sketches of some my small boat ideas.
I built one of my early designs ~ 1984. Family Dory was intended to be the most boat my wife and I could get on our car’s roof racks (75 lbs). She turned out to be an ungainly car-topper, and a bit light for real world longevity. Family Dory is still a great rowboat however. I have taken her on offshore trips and caught several large fish from her. Mr. Bolger was always very flattering of my work.
The improved PB Dory (15.3′ x 4.5′) weighs in closer to 100 lbs. She is easy on the eye, easy to row, and simple to build.
